poetry month shenanigans

read this poem:

An Ode for Ben Jonson

Ah, Ben!
Say how, or when
Shall we, thy guests,
Meet at those lyric feasts
Made at the Sun,
The Dog, the Triple Tun
Where we such clusters had,
As made us nobly wild, not mad;
And yet each verse of thine
Out-did the meat, out-did the frolic wine.

My Ben!
Or come again,
Or send to us
Thy wit's great overplus;
But teach us yet
Wisely to husband it,
Lest we that talent spend;
And having once brought to an end
That precious stock, the store
Of such a wit the world should have no more.

now, read the same poem to the tune of this/a>

ok. it's not a "perfect" fit. but it does = hilarity.

open question.

well, to anyone who has ever heard my music either performed or otherwise...

what kind of music do i play? this was asked of me by someone recently and i am still, a couple of days later, stumped as to an answer. i feel like i should have one, though at the same time, i also feel like i need to really carefully think it out. or i don't.

so any ideas? i could just list the more obvious influences, followed by the words "in a blender," but i HATE doing that (i also hate the whole "so and so, crossed with so and so" schtick, at least when describing myself).

i just felt like using that as a subject line...

(seriously though, if you haven't and are into graphic novels to any degree, check out "the umbrella academy" by gerard way. i didn't expect to like it as much as i did, especially since he's the singer for my chemical romance, a band i can seriously do without... but it is truly amazing, the above subject line just being the start... the first volume, apocalypse suite, is out as a graphic novel now so... yeah....)

And everyone's got a buy and they talk, talk, talk, talk, talk, talk, talk, talk, talk, talk, talk

so...

been a few days without the computer because my macbook decided to give me the dreaded "3 beeps at startup" issue. took it to apple store today where they fixed it quickly (well, once they got to me) and sent me on my merry way without charging me a cent. good times.

sunday was the day i got to see two of the first people i ever met in college (i met will first, actually, though i'm pretty sure it wasn't much longer before i met rohini) get married. i also got to see people from college i haven't seen in a while, which was also nice but not the centerpiece of the day (neither was the delicious food, though it certainly is worth mentioning). it was just a beautiful day all around.

afterwards, annie and i took a nap for a few hours and then got a quick and relatively unsatisfying evening meal.

saturday was rainy and work was lame. i did get to hang out and play with ann's niece a little. (cutest. baby.) we caught up on the rest of the office...

tomorrow. work. ann's birthday thing... after that, i want this week to just be over and get to the weekend so it can then be with next week (with the craft mafia/film festival thing in the middle on sunday, and then for that week to speed along to thursday when we go to the all tomorrows parties festival in new york for that weekend.

cheap beer!

say it ain't so:

(from salon.com's "the United States of cheap beer."

Brand: National Bohemian

AKA: Natty Boh

Hometown: Baltimore

Found in: Pennsylvania to Virginia

Distinguishing characteristics: Natty Boh's mascot, a cartooned gent with a bushy stache and one eye and a top hat, has become a civic icon in Baltimore. It's a matter of local pride to love the beer as much as the mascot, or try to, despite a taste as skanky as one of John Waters' early films.

Vital signs: National Bohemian hasn't been brewed in Baltimore in decades. Yet another Pabst brand.

granted, i find natty boh to be possibly the most disgusting beer i have ever attempted to drink (just being edged out by corona light and pittsburgh's similarly "no longer local" local beer Iron City, but this just seems really sad to me... call it my vestiges of baltimore pride or whatever... how can it no longer be brewed here? very sad...

granted, i'm a beer snob anyway, so i shouldn't begrudge people that like the boh

so yeah. ann already posted about it but holy shit i had to...

thursday night i was in probably the worst car accident i have ever been in. not probably. definitely. basically, head on collision (most of the impact on the drivers side, capped off with going into a tree!) with a dumb kid who was, if not turning left onto a highway onramp, disregarding oncoming traffic, at the very least crossing over into my lane to "get around a patch of ice," basically making it his fault (though, according to the redneck tow truck driver at the lot both cars were taken to, the kid was saying i hit him!)

i barely remember the accident itself. i remember the car hitting me. i remember the tree. i don't remember getting out of the car. i don't remember the air bags going off. i don't remember ann getting out. my head is fine, it was all just so fast (though i remember it in slow motion, when i do remember it).

the good news is i'm okay just bruised. ann is okay too, just walking away with a fractured rib (which is bad, but all considering....). mostly i'm just freaked out. and it's just been a drawn out process with insurance and police and hospitals and rental cars. my car is in bad shape, so we'll see.... i might have to get a "new" one soon.

sigh.

2007 just continues to be wonderful...

help red emma's!

2460, the community space run by Red Emma's, a worker collective here in Baltimore, was robbed last week, with over $2000 worth of audio equipment stolen. Red Emma's does a lot of really great things for the community and holds some amazing events at 2460, such as film screenings, concerts, talks, and, of course, the Charm City Craft Mafia's (the art/craft/indie business collective Sleepy Records is part of) Pile of Craft and Holiday Heap craft fairs (remember the awesome music at Pile of Craft? That wouldn't have been possible without use of Red Emma's equipment). Please consider donating a few dollars to our friends at Red Emma's so they can replace the stolen equipment and continue to have great events.

You can visit their website to make a paypal donation or send checks made out to "Red Emma's" to:

Red Emma's
ATTN: Kate
800 St. Paul St.
Baltimore, MD 21202

If by some chance you have information on the stolen equipment listed below, you can contact Red Emma's at (410) 230-0450 or at info-at-redemmas.org:

-3 AKG D8000S Mics. labeled "2640"
-Yamaha EMC 5016C powered mixer
-Elation Stage setter 816CH DMX Stage Light Console
-2 c. 1970 Silver Realistic Mics.

thanks!
dave

cable: not just an annoying comic book character anymore

dear comcast,

burn in fucking hell.

seriously.

like it was convenient for me to call you from work on tuesday morning to schedule you to come out between 8 and 12 today to fix the grand fuck up you committed.

like it was easy for me to sit here and wait - i did get some minor cleaning done but still - while you did not show up.

like i want my landlord to get upset about this - he already is, btw - because i was dumbe enough to think you assholes were responsible.

i'm reasonable. you idiots get one more chance. one. more. chance. then i say "y'know, internet isn't worth this kind of trouble" and find myself another service provider who, hopefully, is slightly more competent that you jerks.

a formerly happy - or at least reasonably ok with his service - comcast customer.

(and no, when i email you because my cell phone service sucks ass at home, especially when there's a thunder storm going on, don't reply saying i need to talk to a technician to try and "troubleshoot" my problem. the only shooting you're making me feel like doing is at your dumbfuck technicians who have consistantly made this problem worse and worse with their screaming ineptitude).

edit the first: so i call them. angrily but not screamingly and ask WTFuck you fecking idjits? they tell me "well, this is done by a third party and usually they just come out whenever and..." which i stop her at and say "not what i was told! i need to be there when they are to have them fix the issue properly." she tries to talk me off of that notion but i insist, with the whole "and i am seriously beginning to wonder if this is all worth the trouble..." so she calls and leaves their dispatch people - as well as the contractor - instructions to call me when they are coming out (which i partially expect them to ignore, but that is a whole other story... there is the fact though that she said something about burrying the cable, which is pretty distinctly what they are NOT supposed to come out and do, which leaves me worrying that this will get even further fucked up - not to mention further annoying my landlord, as i am certainly going to call him and tell him the situation as soon as it goes wrong, if it does. hopefully he will hold me blameless and not a)charge me extra on rent or b) tell me i have to find another place to live. are either of those likely? eh. maybe...
